August 15 is our Independence Day. It is a public
holiday. It is celebrated throughout India. My
school celebrated the last Independence Day with
great enthusiasm. We all met on the school ground
at 7-30 a.m. The principal explained to us the
meaning and importance of the Independence Day.
Then the flag salutation took place.
The national anthem followed.
Every class-room had been cleaned and decorated
by pupils and teachers the previous day. We went
round to see the decorations. They depicted the
story of Indian’s fight for freedom and
her final victory. There was an exhibition in
the central hall of our school. It showed photographs
of great national heroes like Gandhiji and Jawaharlalji,
accounts of their lives and works, a few paintings
showing Indian life and characters and specimens
of village art and craft.
We went home at about 11-30.
In the evening the school dramatic circle staged
a short play. It was a fine performance with freedom
as its theme. Lovely fire-works ended the celebrations.
