During
the last Divali vacation, we went to Agra to see
the famous Taj Mahal. I had read much about it.
It is one of the wonders of the world. I was eager
to see it. We saw it by day. We saw it by moonlight.
It was indeed, wonderful. It has been described
as "a dream in marble". "a marble
in poem" and "a tear transformed into
marble". It is, indeed, so.
Shah Jehan built it in memory
of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It has made
his love immortal. The building is the most beautiful.
It stands on a raised platform. The big central
dome under the moonlight is a piece of magic.
Its beauty is increased by the smaller domes and
the four corner minarets. Twenty thousand labourers
worked for twenty years to create this marble
poem of love.
I saw the image of the Taj in
the Jamuna. The sight made my heart leap. Then
we came away. I can still see the Taj rising nobly
and beautifully before me. Beauty once seen is
never forgotten.
