Identification:
Be prepared to show identification.
We require identification for
most transactions. When first applying
for a license you must
provide identification documents that add
up to a total value of
6 or more points, also proof of date of
birth. At least one must
have your signature. Please refer to our
identification page to
see the list of documents which we accept
for identification and
their point value.
Driving Age:
No change. You may see or hear reports
that the driving age is
about to change in New York State, or that
there will be a
mandatory waiting period to get a license
after a permit is
issued. This is not the case. There are
no such pending changes.
Any change in the driving age would require
a change to state law
and the law has not been changed. If any
changes do occur, we
will provide the information here.
The New York State Legislature has been
considering "graduated
driver licensing" legislation. This legislation
may affect the
timing of driving restrictions/privileges
for new, younger
drivers, but no such legislation has been
enacted.
The minimum driving age in New York State
is 16. You may not
drive in New York State if you are under
16, even if you are
licensed in another state. Also, drivers
age 16 and 17 are
subject to both the restrictions imposed
in the home state and
the New York restrictions for junior operators.
For important
information on driving restrictions for
learner permits and for
drivers under 18, see our brochure Learner
Permits and Junior
Licenses.
New Drivers--How to Apply:
Before you come in to apply for your permit:
You must be at least 16 years old when
you apply. If
you are under 18, your parent or legal
guardian's
signature is required on your application.
Study the New York State Driver's Manual,
available
from your local DMV office. Parts Two and
Three contain
the information covered on the written
permit test.
You must have proof of identification that
adds up to 6
points and proof of date of birth. If you
do not have 6
points of ID, your parent or guardian must
come with
you to the office, complete form MV-45,
and show their
proof of identification.
You must also provide your Social Security
Number on
the application, or provide a letter from
the US Social
Security Administration stating that you
are not
eligible for a Social Security Number
