After your road test:
When you have passed your road test,
you will have an
interim license. Your photo license will
be mailed to
you in about 4 weeks.
As a new driver, you will serve a six month
probation
period. This probation applies to all,
regardless of
age, who took a road test to qualify for
a New York
license.
A probationary license will be suspended
for 60 days if
the driver is convicted of: speeding, reckless
driving,
following too closely (tailgating), or
any two other
moving violations committed during the
probationary
period. When this suspension ends, the
driver is on
probation for another six months. Conviction
for one of
the listed violations or two other moving
violations
committed during this second probationary
period
results in a six-month license revocation.
US or Canadian Drivers Moving to
New York:
New York honors valid licenses held by
residents of other US
states, its territories and Federal districts
and Canadian
provinces. However, you must apply for
a New York driver's
license within 30 days of becoming a resident
here. If you hold
an out-of-state or Canadian license that
has been in effect for
at least 6 months, and is valid or has
expired within the last 12
months, the written, pre-licensing course
and road test will be
waived. Commercial driver licenses (CDL)
in effect for less than
six months will also be accepted. We will
not accept temporary,
interim or "hardship" licenses, or "in-state
only" licenses. We
will not accept Military Licenses.
To obtain a New York license, apply at
your local DMV office.
You must:
* complete the MV-44 Driver License/Non-Driver
ID application
form for a permit/license or non-driver
ID
* pass a vision test at the DMV office,
or bring a MV-619
Visual Acuity Report form completed by
a medical doctor,
registered nurse, optometrist or optician
within the last 6
months
* provide your out-of-state license; it
will not be returned
to you (lost or stolen out-of-state license?)
* provide at least 3 points of identification
in addition to
your out-of-state license
* provide your Social Security Number on
the application or a
letter from the US Social Security Administration
stating
that you are not eligible for a Social
Security Number
* pay license fee.

Unacceptable out-of-state license documents
- Tests Required. You
must pass the vision and written tests,
a pre-licensing course,
and a road test to obtain a NYS license
as explained under "New
Drivers-How to Apply" if you have only
a learner's permit or if
your out-of-state license:
* is a temporary or interim license, or
* is a "hardship" or "employment only"
license, or
* has been expired for more than 12 months,
or
* was issued less than 6 months ago
If Your Out-of-State License is Lost or
Stolen. If you have lost
your out-of-state photo license, apply
to the state that issued
that license for a letter or driver license
abstract containing
all of the information listed below. The
letter or abstract must
be an original, and must be on a document
that shows the
letterhead of the Department of Motor Vehicles
in that state. The
letter or abstract must contain ALL of
the following information:
* your name, address, date of birth and
license identification
number
* type or class of license and any restrictions
* any convictions, suspensions or revocations
* the date your license was issued, and
the expiration date of
your most recent license.
You may also apply to your former state
for a duplicate license
to replace the lost one, but we will only
accept a duplicate
license if it is a photo license and the
license or an
accompanying letter from that state's DMV
clearly states that
your out-of-state license has been in effect
for at least 6
months.
Bring the letter, abstract or duplicate
to a motor vehicle office
to apply for your NYS license. Remember
that you need 6 points of
identification and proof of date of birth.
Unlike an out-of-state
photo license, a letter or abstract DOES
NOT have any value as
proof of ID or DOB.
