Granite:
Granite is an important
structural and decorative
stone. It’s used for
immense structural work due
to its high compressive strength
and durability. It is the
hardest structural stone found
in nature. Granite’s
rich colors, stiffness and
density, make it an ideal
choice for flooring, counter
tops, vanities as well as
exterior applications. Many
stylish patterns and colors
make granite the most versatile
and trendy of all stones.
It is also a very low-maintenance
stone. Granite is composed
of quartz, feldspars, micas
and other minerals. These
minerals contribute to the
color and texture of the granite
stones. Granites get their
wonderful variety of colors
and patterns from minerals
that are melted into the liquid
mass as it is formed. |

CLEVELAND,
July 25, 2008 /PRNewswire
via COMTEX/ -- New U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) statements
reaffirm that “granite countertops” pose no significant health risk, discounting recent alarmist reports about
the safety of granite countertops,
said the Marble Institute
of America, the nation's leading
natural stone association.
The EPA issued
its new statements late Friday,
following media reports citing
junk science and inconsistent
testing results that created
public concern about granite
countertops as a source of
radon gas.
"While
natural minerals such as granite
may osionally emit rccaadon
gas, the levels of radon attributable
to such sources are not typically
high," the EPA statement
said. "EPA believes the
principal source of radon
in homes is soil gas that
is drawn indoors through a
natural suction process.
"Granite
is a natural mineral formed
by earth's geology,"
the statement continues. "It
is mined and used to produce
commercial products such as
countertops. It is possible
for any granite sample to
contain varying concentrations
of uranium that can produce
radon gas. Some granite used
in countertops may contribute
variably to indoor radon levels.
However, EPA has no reliable
data to conclude that types
of granite used in countertops
are significantly increasing
indoor radon levels." |

Marble:
Marble has been valued
for thousands of years
for its rich palette
of beautiful colors
and appearance and is
perfect, pretty much
anywhere in the house.
Marble stones consist
of limestone that has
undergone heat and pressure.
A transformation process
takes place when the
weight of overlying
material, pressure from
crystal collisions and
heat from the earth's
core generate temperatures
in excess of 1800ºF.Texture
of marble depends on
the form, size and uniformity
of grains. The element
components of marble
determine the color
of the stone. Generally
calcite and dolomite
marbles are of pure
white color. Variations
of whiteness of pure
marbles are due to the
mixture of foreign substances.
Such impurities form
streaks and clouds. |

Slate:
Stone slate is a versatile
and naturally beautiful
rock that can be used
for almost any project.
Whether for commercial
application or for use
in a home, slate stone
will last for years
and keep looking as
good as it did when
first installed. It
is extremely resistant
to tough weather conditions
when used on roofs or
outside flooring, and
can be guaranteed to
last a life time. |
|
Stone
Slate and the Elements:
When stone slate is
used outdoors, depending
on the slate chosen,
it may change slightly
in color over the years.
Some of the green colors
can fade over time,
and other colors may
darken, but this only
adds to the subtle beauty
of the stone. The weathering
as it is called of some
slate stone is due to
the mineral components
in the stone.
If
you are placing stone
slate outside and do
not want to see any
change in color, simply
look for a stone that
is classified as unfading.
The mineral components
in this class of stone
ensure the color will
stay constant. Whether
using a stone that weathers
or not, all stone slate
will be able to withstand
the onslaughts of even
the most extreme weather
conditions.
Indoors
or outdoors, the list
of applications that
this stone can be put
to is a long one. Stair
treads, plaques and
signs, coping, cladding,
and fireplaces are just
a few examples. The
great structural integrity
of stone slate means
it is hard wearing but
at the same time allows
it to be split and cut
to an array of shapes
and sizes. |

Lime
Stone:
Almost looks like Slate,
natural cleft finish,
but the colors are really
amazing.
Lime and Limestone are
one of the basic materials
without which life would
be greatly diminished
and modern commerce and
industry could not exist.
Literally, any object
in our homes and offices
you will find materials
in some form of its manufacture
directly or indirectly.
In fact, the basic essentiality
of Lime and Limestone
has been linked to one
leg of a six-legged stool
on which industry revolves.
The other essential legs
being iron ore, salt,
sulphur, petroleum and
coal. Of these, Lime Stone
is the greatest in physical
volume. |
